Finding Time to Paint When Life Gets Busy – 3 Simple Tips

Simple Ways to Keep Your Creativity Flowing—Even on Your Busiest Days!

Say Yes to New Adventures

As much as I love painting, I know how hard it can be to find the time and energy for it. Between work, family, and daily responsibilities, it’s easy for painting to take a backseat. After a long day of work, managing everything in life, and taking care of Ozzy—my lovable Australian doodle—there are nights when I feel too drained to pick up a brush. If you’ve ever felt the same way, you’re not alone. Today, I want to share three simple tips to help you get back into painting, even when life is hectic.

1. Just Start Doodling

Getting started is often the hardest part. Think of it like Newton’s first law: an object at rest stays at rest unless acted upon. That external force? It’s you! But instead of pressuring yourself to create a full painting, just start doodling. Grab a pencil, a brush, or even a few watercolor washes and play around. There’s something freeing about making marks on paper without any expectations. If a painting comes out of it—great! If not, you still spent time creating instead of scrolling mindlessly on your phone or watching TV. Enjoy the process, and the rest will follow.

2. Paint Small

Small paintings have their own charm, and they are much easier to manage. I recently picked up a smaller watercolor pad, and I love how quickly I can finish a piece without feeling overwhelmed. If you don’t have a small pad, you can tape off sections of a larger sheet to create mini canvases. Start with something simple—a landscape, a pet portrait, or even an abstract wash of colors. Small paintings make the creative process feel light and fun rather than exhausting.

3. Try a Value Study

If even a small painting feels like too much, take it a step simpler: do a quick value study using just one color. Value studies are a fantastic way to practice washes, shapes, and composition without worrying about color choices. Plus, they come together quickly, giving you a sense of accomplishment without a big time commitment. And if your value study turns out well, it can inspire you to take the next step and create a full painting later!
